Overview
Understanding Your Condition
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. It can temporarily disrupt brain function, affecting memory, judgment, reflexes, speech, balance, and coordination. While typically not life-threatening, effects can be serious and appropriate care is essential.

Causes & Types
- Sports injuries: contact sports (football, rugby, hockey, soccer) and non-contact sports (gymnastics, cycling).
- Falls: especially common in young children and older adults.
- Vehicle accidents: car, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian accidents.
- Violence: physical assaults or violent shaking.
- Explosive blasts: common in military personnel.
Common Symptoms
- Immediate: confusion, headache, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, blurred or double vision, sensitivity to light/noise.
- Delayed: memory loss, difficulty concentrating, irritability, sleep disturbances, depression or anxiety.
- Severe (require immediate attention): loss of consciousness, worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, slurred speech, weakness or numbness.
How We Can Help
- Rest: physical and cognitive rest is crucial for recovery.
- Gradual return to activities under medical supervision.
- Symptom management.
Prevention & Management
- Wear appropriate protective gear during sports and activities.
- Always use seatbelts and proper helmets.
- Make living spaces fall-safe, especially for children and older adults.
- Get adequate rest and avoid returning to activity too soon.
- Follow a gradual, medically supervised return-to-play protocol.
